Easy nature walks for families in New Castle County
A good nature walk with little kids is short, mostly flat, and has something to look at. These New Castle County spots fit the bill — boardwalks, nature centers, and gentle paths, several of them stroller-friendly, and you can still be home for nap. Free to walk except Lums Pond's seasonal vehicle fee; each is linked to its full place guide.
1. DuPont Environmental Education Center
Wilmington
A quarter-mile accessible pond loop into the marsh at the end of the Riverwalk, open sunrise to sunset — the easiest 'real nature' outing with a stroller. The visitor center is closed Mondays.
2. Ashland Nature Center
Hockessin
Delaware Nature Society's HQ in Hockessin — about four miles of woodland and meadow trails (pick a short loop near the center) and a summer Butterfly Habitat. Free; grounds open sunrise to sunset.
3. Coverdale Farm Preserve
Greenville
Open fields, farm animals, and gentle trails on a working preserve — free. Public visits run Friday–Sunday, April through November.
4. Brandywine Park
Wilmington
Flat creekside paths in the middle of the city — easy with a stroller, and you can add the playground or the zoo (free December–February).
5. Lums Pond State Park
Bear
Trails along Delaware's biggest freshwater pond — the full loop is long, so do a short out-and-back with little kids. Boat rentals and the Go Ape ropes course are seasonal extras — check dates before you go.
